Fancy a wander through the halls of the Louvre? Well, now you can (at least online).

The Louvre is giving you a rare opportunity to see the Mona Lisa without the crowds. In an ambitious move, the Musée du Louvre has released its entire collection of works to view online for free.

“For the first time, anyone can access the entire collection of works from a computer or smartphone for free, whether they are on display in the museum, on loan, even long-term, or in storage,” announced the museum’s President-Director Jean-Luc Martinez in a statement.

An estimated 482,000 pieces of art have been digitized, an exhaustive process which sees each artwork paired with data such as dimensions, materials and techniques, object history and bibliography.

“These documentary entries, drawn up by museum curators and researchers, come from two museum collection databases, and are updated on a daily basis.”

The museum is giving online viewers a similar experience to visiting in person, offering curated pathways for discovering both famous artworks, as well as lesser-known works.

Explore themed albums, sections by curatorial departments, or wander around the interactive map to explore the museum room by room.
