Fans of The Crown have been waiting to find out who will be cast as Prince Philip in seasons 5 and 6 of the historical drama.

And now it’s been revealed that the role will be taken on by Oscar-nominated Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce.

Pryce will star alongside Imelda Staunton as the Queen for the next instalment of the series, as well as Lesley Manville who is portraying Princess Margaret.

He’s the third actor to take on the role after Matt Smith in seasons 1 and 2, and Tobias Menzies in seasons 3 and 4.

It comes after series creator Peter Morgan announced last month that he had changed his mind about ending The Crown at season 5.

“As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” Morgan said in a statement.

“To be clear, series six will not bring us any closer to present-day – it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”

Pryce has won two Tony Awards and has been nominated for Emmys, Golden Globes and BAFTAs.

He received his first Academy Award nomination last year for his portrayal of Pope Francis in The Two Popes.
