ACT and Tasmania record first COVID-19 deaths
A woman in her 80s has died from COVID-19 in the Australian Capital Territory after contracting the virus overseas.

It’s the first death for the territory, and brings the national death toll to 18.

ACT Health’s chief health officer Dr Kerryn Coleman offered her condolences to the family and friends of the victim.

“This is the very sad reality of this disease, which is seeing the elderly at an increased risk of complications from COVID-19,” she said.

“It is why we need everyone to take the social distancing measures we are implementing seriously. We need everyone to stay at home where possible, to practice good hygiene and to keep at least 1.5 metres away from others.

“These measures will give us the best chance to slow the spread of this disease and protect our most vulnerable. This is particularly important as we will continue to see the number of cases increase and local transmission start to occur in the ACT.”

The announcement of a death in ACT comes not long after Tasmania recorded its first death from the coronavirus.

The victim was also a woman in her 80s who died in hospital this morning.

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein urged Tasmanians to stay home in order to save lives.

“All Tasmanians need to accept and understand that this is not a game,” he said.

“This is serious. People’s lives are at risk.”
