The moon came closer to Earth than it has in over a year.

Supermoon Lights Up The Sky

Last night skywatchers were privy to an astrological wonder as the first supermoon in over a year lit up the night sky. Photographers captured the enormous moon in various locations around the world, from the White House to the church of Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion in Spain.

Astrologer Richard Nolle first defined the supermoon in 1979, calling it “a new or full moon which occurs with the moon at or near (within 90 per cent of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit,” The Express reports. This means the moon must be 226,000 miles from the Earth to be considered “super”.

The last supermoon appeared on November 14, 2016 and was 30% brighter and 14% larger than the normal moon. It was the closest the moon had been to Earth since January 26, 1948.

Nasa research scientists say last night’s moon is part of a “supermoon trilogy”, with additional moons set to appear on January 2 and 31 2018. After this, the next supermoon won’t be visible until November 25, 2034.

Nasa encourages people to view the supermoon when able, declaring it ‘‘a great opportunity for people to start looking at the moon’’.
