Stopping through Ranfurly, Middlemarch, Alexandra and Cromwell, the road trip route traverses dramatic landscapes and natural wonders, along with charming attractions and plenty of activities.

Designed to take 3 – 5 days (or longer), highlights include Dunedin’s Larnach Castle, the albatross colony at Taiaroa Head, the historic Naseby gold mining settlement and a walk along the Lake Dunstan Trail.

For inspiration, discover a number of recommended itineraries, ranging from family friendly to luxury escapes. Perfect for those who want to relax and soak up the scenery, the 5-day Gold Class itinerary starts in Dunedin for a stroll around Larnach Castle and Gardens, and the city’s boutique shops and art trail. Day two explores hidden gems in the back country, traversing Otago’s high country with a suggested stay at the Shortland Sheds glamping spot. The rest of the journey takes you through Naseby, the Central Otago Rail Trail, historic Clyde before ending in Queenstown.

“A touring route has long been a vision for Central Otago communities and seeing that vision come to life is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when regions collaborate on a project.”

“Having an officially recognised and marketed touring route is a great way for us to inspire people to explore further and in more depth, those places and diverse authentic experiences the three partner regions have to offer. And we know that New Zealanders love a good road trip.”
