STYLE Editors Dissect the Golden Globes ‘Red Carpet’

Awards season was always going to look different this year, with COVID restrictions necessitating a heavily socially distanced take on what would normally be some of the most highly attended A-List events of the showbiz calendar.

But while it’s always difficult to be the first one off the mark, today’s Golden Globes ceremony set a solid bar for the weeks ahead, with many ‘attendees’ rising to the occasion of a digital ‘red carpet’, Zooming in from their homes in full Hollywood glam.

Here’s who we’re taking inspo from next #FormalFriday…

They say Emily in Paris didn’t deserve any gongs (or noms for that matter) but Lily Collins killed it in the style stakes if you ask me. I love the level of detail in this embroidered Saint Laurent gown, as well as her show-stopping Cartier jewels. – Ashley Wallace, culture editor

She looks unreal in the dress alone, but with its statement sleeves and regal train, the dramatic proportions of Anya Taylor-Joy’s matching overcoat take this emerald green Dior Haute Couture look to best-dressed territory. Celeb stylist extraordinaire Law Roach strikes again. – Phoebe Watt, associate editor

Count. Me. In. For every part of Julia Garner’s knockout GG look – from the black and white Prada dress with the plunging V neckline and ‘20s inspired detailing to the complementary chunky jewels and absolutely flawless makeup by Hung Vanngo (that glossy red lip!) to the perfect French twist finished with a crystal hair pin. *chef’s kiss* – Josie Steenhart, sub-editor

A post shared by Daisy Edgar-Jones (@daisyedgarjones)

It’s very Chanel, but I also love the whimsical nature of Daisy Edgar-Jones’ daisy lace (how fitting!) number, even more so because she appears to be jumping on a bed and touching the roof in playful celebration while wearing it, which I can get down with. Sometimes awards looks can seem so static and statuesque – particularly as this year most are solely captured for the ‘gram, it’s nice to see some real joy and emotion, even though she didn’t win her nominated category.

A post shared by Elle Fanning (@ellefanning)

Of course if you are going for the perfectly poised look, my second choice would be Elle Fanning in icy Gucci. It’s a shame she had no red-carpet to walk because this look was perfectly ‘Old Hollywood’ without looking fussy, with the dress, the jewels, the hair and makeup all coming together like a dream. – Megan Bedford, beauty editor
