South Australia to reopen border with NSW at midnight

South Australia to reopen border with NSW at midnight
Residents of New South Wales will be allowed to travel into South Australia without going into quarantine from tonight.

It comes after NSW recorded the second consecutive day of no community transmission of coronavirus. The state has not recorded any untraceable cases of the virus for two weeks.

South Australian premier Steven Marshall had said the border reopening would go ahead if no new cases of community transmission were recorded in NSW on Wednesday.

“NSW has been doing extraordinarily well so we’re pretty confident that as of midnight tonight the border with NSW, which has been closed for months and months, will reopen and we can’t wait to welcome people from NSW with open arms,” Marshall told Nine.

“This has been a massive distraction for our economy in SA and people have done it tough with family dislocation, business dislocation; all that comes to an end as of midnight tonight so we’re really looking forward.”

Travellers will still need to fill out an online pre-approval and declare that they have not been outside the ‘safe community transmission zone’ within 14 days of entering South Australia.

After the border with NSW opens, SA will be open to all states and territories from midnight except Victoria.

It comes after Queensland said it would open its borders to more parts of NSW as of next weekend.

The Queensland Government said residents in 41 postcodes would be added to the Queensland-NSW border bubble from 1am on 1 October.

The government said it will open the border to the whole of NSW when the state goes 28 days without recording a coronavirus infection with no known source.

“I hope the Queensland Government takes that final step in getting rid of the border because the evidence is certainly indicating that it can,” NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Wednesday.

“And I feel more confident after yesterday that that could be sooner than I anticipated.”
