The SCAR Project – Beyond the scars of breast cancer
The SCAR Project exhibition reveals how inner beauty and strength can transcend even the deepest scars of young women living with breast cancer.

The SCAR Project is a series of large-scale portraits of young breast cancer survivors shot by fashion photographer David Jay. The women featured in the images range from 18-35 and originate from various corners of the globe.

The aim of the SCAR Project “is three-fold: raise public consciousness of early-onset breast cancer, raise funds for breast cancer research/outreach programs and help young survivors see their scars, faces, figures and experiences through a new honest and ultimately empowering lens” (http://www.thescarproject.org/mission).

While the project’s origins stem from creating awareness, the end result has turned into so much more, stirring larger questions regarding society’s perceptions of beauty and the human condition itself.

The body of work not only reveals the reality of cancer, largely in the forms of visible scars, SCAR Project also highlights the strength and courage of young women and the sheer power of inner beauty.

The exhibition provides an insightful window into the disease and the effects it has on sufferers, while also importantly acting as a form of catharsis for the women in the images as David Jay explains  “Through these simple pictures, they seem to gain some acceptance of what has happened to them and the strength to move forward with pride.”

The Australian premiere of the international exhibition launches in Sydney on Thursday 11 Sep 2014.
