The Duchess of York could make a historic first at Princess Beatrice's wedding next year.

It may be early days for Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi as they plan next year’s wedding.

But already there is an indication that their special day could go down in history as a royal first following a change in UK law.

And it’s Beatrice’s mother Sarah Ferguson who could be at the centre of this exciting piece of history and make her daughter’s special occasion even more special.

Previously, only fathers were permitted to record their signature on British marriage certificates.

Recent legislation, however, has changed that – allowing the mother of the bride to sign their name too.

That means The Duchess of York could be the first ever mother in the royal family to sign a wedding certificate.

The Duchess wasn’t able to sign Princess Eugenie’s marriage documents as the new law hadn’t come into effect, but that will be far from the only difference between the sisters’ weddings.

A source told People that Beatrice and Edoardo’s big day would likely be a far more watered-down occasion compared to sister Eugenie’s extravagant wedding at Windsor Castle, where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also married.

“She has talked about having a smaller affair in the past,” the source told People.

“Beatrice is more serious and Eugenie is the outgoing extrovert, she’s so bubbly and fun.

Beatrice is more reserved and discreet. She holds back more, she is very polite, very well-educated but more formal and quiet in her personalty, so I think it will be a very different wedding to Eugenie’s.”

Beatrice and Edoardo got engaged almost two weeks ago when the Italian property tycoon got down on one knee during a trip to the stunning Amalfi Coast, announcing on social media that they “can’t wait to be married”.
