Royal babies to bombshell interviews: The biggest royal moments of 2021
2021 has been a monumental year for the Royal family. From loss to new life, they have been through it all this year.

Royal baby boom

2021 was a bumper year for royal babies, with the family welcoming four new additions. In February, Princess Eugenie and husband Jack had their first child, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank. Zara and Mike Tindall welcomed their third child in March, with the Queen’s granddaughter giving birth to her baby son at her bathroom at home.

In July, Prince Harry and Meghan welcomed their daughter, Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor safely in California.

A cousin for baby August arrived in September, with the birth of Princess Beatrice and her husband’s first child, Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi.

The new arrivals mean the Queen now has a dozen great-grandchildren to dote over.

Meghan and Harry’s bombshell Oprah interview

In March, Meghan and Harry joined Oprah Winfrey in their first sit down interview since leaving the royal family. In the shocking conversation, Meghan revealed that the pressures of life as a royal made her suicidal and alleged someone from the family questioned how dark their son, Archie’s skin would be.

Buckingham Palace released a brief statement on behalf of the Queen following the “concerning” conversations had during the tell-all interview. “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.”

Will and Harry reunite for Diana statue unveiling

Princes William and Harry put their differences aside when they unveiled a statue to their late mother Princess Diana on what would have been her 60th birthday, saying they hoped it would be a lasting memorial to her life and legacy.

Harry and Meghan’s new life

Harry and Meghan embarked on their new life in California since leaving the royal family. In September, the pair attended the Global Citizen Live event at Central Park to encourage equal access to COVID-19 vaccines.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Archewell Foundation announced a multi-year partnership with Procter & Gamble, and the couple also announced plans to develop a Netflix docu-series about the Invictus Games.

In celebration of her 40th birthday, Duchess Meghan launched a female mentorship campaign in a fun-loving video starring Melissa McCarthy, and published her first children’s book, titled The Bench. 

The royal family mourn the death of Prince Philip

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh passed away on 9 April, 2021 at age 99. In a statement, the Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

Queen Elizabeth bade farewell to Prince Philip at a funeral that celebrated his seven decades of Royal and Naval service. Due to Covid restrictions, only 30 guests attended, including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

In the lead up to the funeral, the Queen, Prince William and more royal shared unseen photos and touching tributes to the Duke of Edinburgh.

Duchess of Cornwall delivers passionate speech on ending violence against women

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, delivered a passionate speech in her bid to lift the shame and stigma surrounding violence against women.

“And it takes an entire community – male and female – to dismantle the lies, words and actions that foster a culture in which sexual assault is seen as normal, and in which it shames the victim,” she said.

“So let us all leave here and try to get the men in our lives to participate in building a ‘shameless’ society.”

Prince William launches his Earthshot Prize

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge walked the green carpet at the first-ever Earthshot Prize awards at London’s Alexandra Palace on 17 October. Five £1 million were awarded in the categories of protecting and restoring nature, cleaner air, reviving oceans, waste-reduction and climate change.

“This is a generational baton-handling, my grandfather started it, my father has picked it up and really accelerated that and I feel right now that it’s my responsibility, I really feel that we are at a tipping point,” said William, speaking alongside renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough.
