The Rolling Stones are set to become the biggest musical act to play in Cuba since its 1959 revolution.

The Stones they will play a free concert in Havana’s Ciudad Deportiva stadium on March 25 – just three days after a visit to Havana by US President Barack Obama.

The concert is expected to draw a massive audience. The Cuban government, once seen as a communist despot, used to persecute young people for listening to rock music as it was seen as a form of Western capitalism.

The government has since dropped that policy and now increasingly allows large non-official gatherings. It continues a thaw in US-Cuba relations started in 2014 and culminating in Cuba, last year, being removed from the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list. Trade restrictions have also been eased.

The Rolling Stones said in a statement that “we have performed in many special places during our long career but this show in Havana is going to be a landmark event for us, and, we hope, for all our friends in Cuba too.”
