The Queen has called an emergency meeting over the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s shock announcement they will be stepping back from royal duties.

A source has revealed the royal households’ teams have been summoned to work quickly to find a solution to Harry and Meghan’s plans to resign as “senior” members of the Royal Family.

“The Queen, the Prince of Wales, and the Duke of Cambridge have directed their teams to work at pace with governments and the Sussexes’ office to find workable solutions and this is expected to take days, not weeks,” the source told People magazine.

“It is complicated. This is happening very quickly. And the proof in that is the fact that this will take days and not weeks.”

The comments echo the brief statement released by the Royal Family following the Sussexes’ announcement, although it had said working through the issues would “take time”.

The statement read: “Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”

It’s believed the pair did not consult with the Queen prior to making their public announcement.

Meanwhile, it’s believed Meghan will join in the discussions with the royal households by telephone, with the BBC reporting the Duchess has already left the UK to return to Canada.

It’s believed Harry and Meghan left baby Archie behind in Canada in the care of a close friend and a nanny.

Harry and Meghan sent shockwaves around the world when they announced their plans to “carve out a progressive new role” within the institution of the Royal Family.

“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” they said.

The pair also revealed they will be sharing their time between the United Kingdom and North America.

“This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity,” they said.
