Sending your children off to boarding school must be a tough call. But when all four of them are heading off together, at least they've got company.

Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark have confirmed they are sending their four children to boarding school in Switzerland.

Danish media have been reporting that Prince Christian, 13, Princess Isabella, 12, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, both eight, will start at an international boarding school in January 2020.

The Danish Royal Head of Communications Lene Balleby confirmed the news but there is no indication of which school they will be attending.

The family shared the news during an official visit to France to promote stronger economic relations between the two nations.

Princess Mary described sending them to boarding school as “a gift they can have with them for the rest of their lives”.

Their children know the central European nation well, and the family frequently enjoy ski trips to the Swiss resort of Verbier.

With both German and French as official languages, it’s possible their parents chose multilingual Switzerland to help their children improve their language skills.

Prince Frederik is fluent in English, French and German as well as his mother tongue, Danish.

Princess Mary is no stranger to being educated abroad. Australian-born, she attended elementary school in Texas before returning to Tasmania, where she also went to university.
