Lupita Nyong'o spearheads new anti-ivory campaign

Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o has announced she’ll be a global advocate for elephants with the international conservation organisation WildAid.

The actress who was born in Mexico to Kenyan parents and educated in the United States, described her visit to a Kenyan national park and elephant orphanage as “life-changing”.

Over 30,000 elephants are killed every year to satisfy demand for ivory in China and the Far East where it is worth more than $2,000 a kilogram.

Set to star in Star Wars: Episode VII later this year Nyong’o said, “I am proud of my Kenyan heritage, and part of that heritage is the incredible wildlife haven that is in our care. Poaching steals from us all.”

The 32-year-old said it was time to ban ivory sales the world over, and “consign the tragedy of the ivory trade to history.”
