When you think of the word ‘Philanthropy’ it’s pretty difficult to not think Oprah. Over the years, both on and off the screen, Oprah Winfrey has dedicated her life to giving and endorsing charities all around the world.

If you’ve been busy and haven’t heard the latest, here is a quick run through of Oprah’s current philanthropic ventures…

The Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation

Taking over in 2010 from what was the Angel Network. The project is a non-profit, volunteer organisation that inspires others to make a difference in the lives of others. It organises projects in under-served communities and provides educational initiatives and helps people fulfil basic human needs and regain their dignity. Its focus is on poverty, child neglect and disease.

Leadership Academy for Girls

As a mentor and philanthropist – her largest gift is the $40 million she donated to establish the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg – she teaches some of life’s most important lessons. “I say this to my girls all the time at the school. They are 15, 16, and in this phase where they don’t know who their true friends are. A true friend is someone who wants to the best for you – always. A true friend is never, ever going to be jealous of your glory, your triumph, your joys. They revel and are as joyful in your joy as you are. That is a true friend”.

Located in South Africa, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls opened in 2007, funded by viewer donations and the huge investment from Oprah herself. The free school offers state-of-the-art facilities, including a library, a theatre and computer labs.

“Every child has the right to an education, but to attend the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls will be a privilege. The students who are invited to attend the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls have shown that they have the ability to excel, and to move beyond challenging circumstances. Through exemplary service to their communities, they have demonstrated their potential to effect positive and enduring change. The Academy will nurture this potential, and raise the next generation of transformative South African leaders.”- Oprah

On top of all this, Oprah also has announced her will is going to donate 1 billion dollars to charity.
