The country will remain in lockdown until at least Friday, while Auckland's lockdown will continue for another week.

NZ lockdown extended for four days, Auckland for seven days

New Zealand’s lockdown has been extended, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced this afternoon.

All of New Zealand will remain at level 4 for four days, until 11:59 pm on Friday 27 August, which will be reviewed on Friday afternoon. Auckland will stay in lockdown until Tuesday 31 August, which will be reviewed on Monday 30 August.

“The safest option for all of us right now is to hold the course for longer,” said Ardern.

“We just need to keep it up, ensure we are not in restrictions any longer than we need to be.”

There are 35 new community cases of Covid today, with 33 in Auckland and two in Wellington. This makes the total number of active cases 107.

Ardern says the four days gives them enough time to gather data to see if the cases have spread to other parts of the country. As of today, there are more than 320 locations of interest.
