Nourish your body with raw energy

Nourish your body with raw energy
Raw food is inherently rich in health-giving nutrients that nourish the body and restore vitality.

Over the past few years, the raw food movement has been gaining momentum as the health-conscious look to improve their well-being through eating lean and clean. Curious about raw? We take a look at raw foodism and explain why those green cold-pressed juices are the key to increased energy and vitality.

What is a Raw Diet?

Eating raw is eating food that has not been heated above 47°C. The reasoning behind this definition is that beyond 47°C, enzymes are denatured or destroyed, and vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients are lost, diminishing the nutritional value of the natural food. These nutrients, which are inherent in raw food, are the building blocks our bodies need to function and assist in cell growth, repair and maintenance.

The Body-Nutrient Connection

Enzymes are the living proteins that direct the life force into our biochemical and metabolic processes. They transform and store energy, make active hormones, have anti-inflammatory effects and help in healing the body. But when we heat food, we destroy many of these enzymes.

Minerals have a synergistic relationship with vitamins. We need both for our bodies to function optimally, which is why a diet rich in vitamins and minerals is essential to good health. Once heated, many of the vitamins and minerals are destroyed, diminishing their function.

Phytonutrients found in plant foods protect the cells in our bodies. Abundant in fruit and vegetables, phytonutrients are also found in plant foods such as whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, and are destroyed once heated. Eating raw food enables these nutrients to go to work, nourishing each cell in our body. When you consider that we are each made up of trillions of cells, you realise the importance of feeding them good stuff.

Upping your RAW Food intake

Boosting your raw food intake can be as simple as blending up a raw maca and cacao cashew smoothie or ditching dairy and making your own raw cashew or almond milk. You’ll get more protein and both are high in magnesium, which is good for bone strength.

Give raw baking a go and say no to wheat, refined sugar and dairy. Raw baking is naturally vegan and gluten-free, using dates, nuts and coconut as key ingredients so you’re eating good fats and less carbohydrates.

Try sprouting buckwheat and add it to your salads, use as breakfast cereal or make sprouted buckwheat bread using a food dehydrator.

Eating well is having a balanced, varied diet rich in whole unprocessed foods to ensure your body receives all the nutrients it needs. We’re not suggesting you go fully raw, but adding more raw plant foods to your diet will give you more energy, improve your digestion, make your skin glow – and you’ll feel better for it.
