Sailing New Zealand has had a crushing win over the US

In emphatic fashion, Team New Zealand has claimed the 35th America’s Cup. Team New Zealand won the Cup in Bermuda on Monday (local time) after almost white-washing the US holders with a revolutionary boat and a new superstar sailor, and so avenging a humbling defeat four years ago.

Leading 6-1 overnight and needing just one more race win to secure the “Auld Mug” for a third time in the nation’s history, the Kiwis pulled through to dominate team USA.

The crew celebrated with Emirates Team New Zealand skipper Peter Burling saying “we’re on top of the world”, after Aotearoa raced to victory.

Aussie Jimmy Spithill, the skipper for Oracle Team USA expressed his disappointment at their loss, but praised the Kiwis on their dramatic win. “We’re disappointed obviously but first of all full credit to Team New Zealand, what a series,” Spithill said. “They were really a class above in this America’s Cup… They outsailed us and had a better boat… really well done.”

Prime Minister Bill English has congratulated Emirates Team New Zealand on their win, “They have done an amazing job to beat formidable opposition,” he said. “The crewmanship aboard Team NZ has been outstanding and the innovative use of pedal power to drive the hydraulics on the New Zealand boast has showcased Kiwi ingenuity to the world.”

The team is due home Wednesday next week, with a parade likely to be held later that day or on Thursday.
