Music industry legend Michael Gudinski dies
Australian music industry icon Michael Gudinski has died aged 68.

Gudinski, who founded label Mushroom Records, died “peacefully in his sleep at his home in Melbourne”, according to a statement.

Gudinski was best known for shaping the careers of home-grown stars such as Kylie Minogue and Jimmy Barnes.

Mushroom Records launched Minogue’s career, releasing her first album, Kylie, in 1988.

Gudinski founded the Mushroom Group in 1972 at just 20 years old. It grew to be Australia’s largest independent entertainment group covering touring, record labels, publishing, merchandising, booking agencies, film and television production and creative services.

His touring company Frontier Touring helped to bring some of the world’s biggest names in music to Australian shores.

Most recently he focused on initiatives to support the music industry during the pandemic, launching events to showcase contemporary Australian music.

Tributes are flooding in on social media for Gudinski, with a number of Australian musicians sharing messages thanking him for his support, including Amy Shark, G Flip, Dannii Minogue, Eskimo Joe and Birds of Tokyo.

Jimmy Barnes led the tributes with his heartfelt post expressing his sadness that the “heart of Australian music was ripped out”.
