The new wellness trend of moon milk seems to be taking the world (and Pinterest) by storm.

Saves on Pinterest for recipes and photos of this trending nighttime brew have soared by 700% since last year. Probably because moon milk is the prettiest thing anyone’s ever seen in a cup. Soft pastel hues are made to look even softer through fluffy milk. And sprinkled petals or spices almost make the cuppa too lovely to drink.

It’s no secret that people are always on the lookout for the latest concoction that will be a great ailment fix. New superfoods are constantly being discovered, and new research is always suggesting a new way to diet. So it may come as a surprise that moon milk is nothing new. For centuries people have been drinking warm milk before bed, and golden milk (milk flavoured with turmeric) has been part of south Asian culture for centuries.

In a nutshell, moon milk is warm milk mixed with spices and honey. Its main selling point is the fact that it can help you sleep, providing the perfect nightcap for when you’re feeling stressed. One of the reasons it has this effect is because milk itself contains tryptophan and melatonin, which are natural substances that are known for inducing sleep. Another reason the brew is so good for sending you to sleep is that of adaptogens, an essential ingredient of moon milk. Adaptogens are plant-based compounds mainly derived from herbs and roots. They supposedly moderate the body’s response to stress, boost energy levels, and even help to promote a healthy immune system. Ashwagandha is one of the most popular adaptogens found in these Pinterest-worthy drinks and was also reportedly an important herb in Ayurvedic medicine.

When choosing herbs for your own brew of moon milk, look for naturopath-approved blends. Otherwise, enjoy sipping your little cup of heaven and the sweet dreams that will almost certainly follow.
