Meryl Streep to fund a screenwriting workshop for women over 40
Meryl Streep is launching a screenwriting workshop for women over 40 because she is the best

Just when we think we’ve reached peak Meryl Streep love, the actress has announced that she is launching a screenwriting lab for women writers aged over 40.

The lab – which will be run by New York Women in Film and Television (of which Streep is a long time supporter) – and IRIS, a collective of women filmmakers -was announced at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday.

The initiative will be called The Writers Lab and it will hold a screenwriting retreat in upstate New York (no word yet on whether the upstate retreat will also host Meryl Streep).

To be selected eligible women must put in a submission between May 1-June 1, with eight women to be announced as winners of the initiative on August 1.

The lab will have input from mentors such as screenwriter Kirsten Smith (Legally Blonde) and producer Caroline Kaplan (Boyhood) among others.

The initiative is an important example of ‘putting your money when your mouth is’ when it comes to addressing Hollywood’s women problem.

According to a survey from the Centre for the Study of Women in Television and Film last year, only 16 per cent of those working as directors, executive producers, producers, writers, cinematographers and editors on Hollywood’s top films were women.
