It’s not too late! Mother’s Day is this Sunday May 9. Whether you’d forgotten, or you’re still undecided on a gift to give the mother in your life, there’s still time to choose something to make the occasion memorable for the mother in your life!
Here are a number of suggestions inspired by the MiNDFOOD team’s own selections and ideas:
Chocolate subscription box
This was gifted to me a couple of years ago and I’ve always thought it was a wonderful gift idea. More than a one-off hamper, you get a curated box of chocolates delivered each month. A quick Google search will bring up plenty of companies, if you’re in New Zealand, I love The Chocolate Tour, which offers a range of subscriptions, from monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly so you can tailor it to your liking. – Kathryn Chung – concierge editor
Dining with a twist
Treat your mum to a lunch or dinner out with a twist. Auckland restaurant Cazador has partnered with boutique cinema The Capitol for a $55 dinner + movie offering every Wednesday this winter, while Ponsonby Greek eatery, Daphne’s Taverna, (above) has collaborated with clean skincare brand sans[ceuticals] for a special Mother’s Day lunch or dinner. Or plan a weekend away in the Hawke’s Bay and book a ticket to the winter Food & Wine Classic. – Kathryn Chung – concierge editor
The gift of great skin
Pampering skincare and treatments are all well and good, but they become even more impressive when they deliver a noticable improvement to your skin. Gift the mother in your life both by choosing a gift voucher from Lovely by skin institute so they can try the modern, advanced appearance treatments of offer, or choose some products from Lovely’s results-driven skincare range of products designed in New Zealand by one of Skin Institute’s expert dermatologists, available from each of Lovely’s six stores. My picks? The Collagen Restoration Serum packed with peptides to boost collagen and regenerate, or the Hydrating Night Cream to step up hydration while slumbering. – Megan Bedford, beauty editor
Soft sheepskin slippers
Give the gift of warm feet! La Tribe’s crossover sheepy slippers are an easy option that make wandering on cold wood floors much nicer each morning! My pair is regularly stolen by my partner and my son alike, as they rave about their plush finish which is still holding up well after months of wear. I think they make a great gift for mums of any age. – Megan Bedford, beauty editor
Classic cotton pyjamas
For the seven Mother’s Day’s I have so far experienced, all I have wished for is a sleep-in and a hug (in that order). This year my request is no different and all I require to be happy, however I would not be mad should a pair of General Sleep’s soft cotton pyjamas find their way into my hands in addition! – Megan Bedford, beauty editor
Precious keepsake necklace
Meadowlark’s new Maman necklace is pretty much made for Mother’s Day gifting. ‘Maman’, meaning mother in French, is beautifully engraved onto the pendant, which is also etched with a heart and a star set with a tiny twinkling precious stone (choose from a pink or blue sapphire or a reclaimed diamond). The vintage-inspired piece also gives a nod to the tradition of ‘mother’s jewellery’ – treasured keepsakes meant to be passed down or inherited through generations. – Josie Steenhart, contributing editor
Playful garden silhouette
Both of my parents are bird lovers, and have spent recent years cultivating a happy native plant-filled garden attracting all kinds of feathered friends from tui to pīwakawaka, so one of these cool Metalbird garden sculptures from Phil Walters, who started making the captivating designs “simply to surprise, delight and intrigue” people in his neighbourhood, seems like a perfect pick. – Josie Steenhart, contributing editor
Designer soap
Soap can be a cliche Mother’s Day gift but this Fazeek soap from Makers’ Mrkt makes for an eye-catching addition to any home. Pair it with a Fazeek Wave Soap Dish from the site, and you’ve got a chic combination that’s sure to satisfy mum. – Ashley Wallace, culture editor
Flowers and a meal
My mum is yet to dine at Kingi so I’d love to take her there this Mother’s Day. The restaurant is partnering with Isadia Floral for the day, with flowers available for sale in the laneway between Kingi and The Hotel Britomart. You can kill two birds with one stone by reserving both a table and a bouquet through Kingi’s website. – Ashley Wallace, culture editor
