The unknown Maroubra baby was given a proper funeral by her community

Maroubra unknown baby given funeral

More than 100 people turned out for the funeral of the unknown baby that was found buried in the sand at Maroubra Beach. Her name, cause of death or parents were never known.

However that didn’t stop a groundswell of love, or adoptive parents who gave her the name Lily Grace, from giving a tiny life a fitting farewell with the community singing songs and prayers.

Lily Grace’s informal adoptive parents, Maroubra couple Maroubra couple Filomena D’Alessandro and Bill Green, led the proceedings. The pair approached police after reading about the baby in the newspaper and asked to give her a proper burial. Due to legal reasons the baby had to be given a name.

“She’s a child that we have claimed as our own, not just Bill and myself but as a community,” Ms D’Alessandro told Fairfax Media.  “She’s our child, so we’ve just made sure that today has been lovely for her.”

Mourners, many of them in tears, lit pink candles for Lily Grace and a garden for children who die without families has been installed as Lily Grace’s legacy.
