The three-time Grammy Award-winner wrote and sang a number of songs in the 70s that remain hits today, including ‘Lean On Me’, ’Ain’t No Sunshine’ and ‘Lovely Day’.

His death comes as ‘Lean On Me’ has provided inspiration during the coronavirus pandemic, with numerous people working on the frontline and artists recording and sharing their own renditions of the song.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Withers’ family said they were “devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father”.

“A solitary man with a heart driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other,” the statement read.

“As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.”

His death has prompted an outpouring of condolences, particularly from artists who have been inspired by his music.
