We caught up with Felicity Turner, group marketing manager of Sleepy Head, to discuss the importance of a fresh, good quality mattress for decent sleep.
What are the innovations in mattresses?
We don’t look at sleep as being just about the mattress anymore. There are so many things that are critical to a great night’s sleep. We’ve launched the most amazing pillows, which we make here in New Zealand. We fundamentally believe that a mattress should never be purchased without a pillow to suit. The mattress supports your body but the pillow is the bed for your head. They have to work together to support the body properly as you sleep.
How often should you replace your mattress?
This can often be a very hard thing for people to recognise, hence most mattresses hang around a lot longer than they should. We recommend replacing your mattress every 8-10 years. Your mattress carries moisture, which comes from your body each night. This can lead to other nasties, which is why we recommend a mattress protector. After a number of years the moisture can be unhealthy to sleep on and may start to break down the layers of comfort and support inside your bed. Because wear happens so gradually, eventually people start to notice that they aren’t getting the support they used to.
