She’s been named the world’s most beautiful woman by People a record five times and is one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood. Yes, Julia Roberts will go down as one of her generation’s greatest celebrities, having starred in countless critically-acclaimed performances and garnering a number of awards throughout her career. Here are 7 facts you may not know about this successful star.

1. She’s a UNICEF ambassador of goodwill

Julia has worked with UNICEF for many years. In 1995 she travelled to Haiti to visit programs for needy children, famously dancing with street children at a training center in the Port-au-Prince slums of La Saline (pictured below). The actress publicly spoke of her experience, telling People “My heart is just bursting.”

2. She’s best friends with George Clooney

These two Hollywood heavyweights have been close friends for years. The pair first starred together in Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and were known for their on-set pranks. During the filming for Ocean’s Twelve (2004), Julia told Vanity Fair she and George became even closer as her male costar took on a caring role when she revealed she was pregnant with twins.

3. …and Oprah

Oprah and Julia have also been friends for years, with the latter telling Extra TV: “I’ve made a lifelong friend in that woman. I think she’s one of the highlights of humankind. I’m lucky that she’s my pal.”

4. She did a Broadway show with Paul Rudd and Bradley Cooper

In 2006, three of Hollywood’s biggest stars took to the stage for a performance of the Broadway play Three Days of Rain. Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper and Julia Roberts are pictured below enjoying their curtain call at New York’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theater.

5. She has won 1 Academy Award and 3 Golden Globes

Julia won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in the critically acclaimed film Erin Brockovich (2000), for which she also received a Golden Globe. She also won Golden Globe awards for Pretty Woman and Steel Magnolias.

6. She’s an environmentalist

Julia has championed many environmental initiatives throughout her career, most notably the Clean Air Initiative. In 2006 she spoke in support of the California ballot initiative, which aims to provide funds for research to develop cleaner energy sources and reduce oil dependency.

7. She was the highest-paid actress in the world for years

Throughout most of the 1990s and in the first half of the 2000s, Julia was the world’s highest-paid actress. She received US$300,000 for Pretty Woman in 1990 and an unparalleled US$25 million for Mona Lisa Smile in 2003. Her current net worth is estimated to be between 140 and 170 million US dollars.
