He hasn't even won the election yet, but Joe Biden has received a record number of votes.

The former vice president has received more votes than any other candidate in US history.

Biden, who has received more than 73.6 million votes (and counting), broke the record previously held by Barack Obama.

Obama received 69,498,516 votes in the 2008 election.

Biden is leading the popular vote again President Donald Trump. Trump currently has over 69.6 million votes, also surpassing Obama’s record number of votes.

The record numbers demonstrate a particularly high voter turnout this year, with 2020 on track to have the largest voter turnout of the last century.

The popular vote does not, of course, secure the election. The race for the White House remains on a knife edge with a handful of battleground states too close to call.

At the time of writing, Biden has 253 Electoral College votes and Trump has 213, with 270 votes needed to win the presidency.
