Look on the bright side

By MiNDFOOD Editor-in-Chief Michael McHugh

I have a friend who is going through a rough time at the moment – multiple things seem to have backfired on them throughout their life. When they finally got some good news, they couldn’t see the bright side and potential around that situation, and spoke about even that potentially turning into a negative.

One of the features in this issue is on ‘negative bias’, a tendency to focus on negative experiences and negative emotions as opposed to positive ones, is worth reading. We all filter information in different ways when trying to make sense of the world, depending on our values, judgements and experiences. In forming these habits and experiencing these emotions, we often put a spin on things that suits our own narrative. We have labelled this phenomenon ‘emotional fake news’, where we always assume the worst in any situation.

With so much going on in our lives and in the world around us, we need to stop and listen to ourselves and stop the negativity. It’s far too easy to be grim, take a negative view and see the dark side of life looming, rather than taking an optimistic point of view and believing in yourself.

Say goodbye to all your negativity and get out there and explore what the world has to offer. In our Adventure Travel Special: Kerry Van Der Jagt takes you on a journey of discovery through Ukraine, Moldova and Romania, including a trip to Pripyat, the Ukrainian city closest to Chernobyl. Or spend a gorgeous night under the stars at the Wadi Rum Luxury Camp eating zarb, the traditional barbecue of the Bedouin tribe, in Jordan? The Jordanian city of Jerash is home to some of the best-preserved ancient Roman ruins in the world.
