From smiles and pleasantries to military disarmament and even a diplomatic menu to match, we sum up the Singapore Summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The leaders shook hands at a luxury hotel on Singapore’s Sentosa island before proceeding to talks. After the summit the leaders signed a “comprehensive” document, promising a new relationship between the nations.

CNN reports that Kim Jong-un had a great summit. And he didn’t even need to give anything away. This after the North Korean leader has already begun denuclearization at home. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has ordered the suspension of US military exercises with South Korea, in a surprise concession at the extraordinary summit with the North Korean leader, as reported by The Guardian.

In a statement issued by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, he commends the leaders for pursuing a diplomatic solution. “I also thank all those who contributed to creating the conditions for this key moment. The two leaders are seeking to break out of the dangerous cycle that created so much concern last year. Peace and verifiable denuclearization must remain the clear and shared goal,” he said.

A bit of Hollywood magic

Trump’s salesman pitch to Kim included a bizzare Hollywood-style trailer, to persuade the North Korean dictator that he can be “a hero” by choosing peace and prosperity over nuclear weapons. The four-minute film, contrasting images of warplanes and artillery with skyscrapers and speedboats, portrays Trump and Kim as the stars of history in the making – “two men, two leaders, one destiny” – with the US president getting top billing. The narrator suggests that “a new world can begin today, one of friendship, respect and goodwill”.

What the leaders ate

On a lighter note, for a man who likes well-done steaks with a side of tomato ketchup, it was quite a complicated menu for Trump. “Green mango kerabu with honey lime dressing and fresh octopus”; “Oiseon – Korean stuffed cucumber”; “Daegu jorim – soy-braised cod fish with radish, Asian vegetables”, the BBC reports.
