Ice Bucket Challenge sees dramatic rise in Motor Neurone Disease donations
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Australia have reported a influx of donations this period, fifteen times larger than that of the same period last year.

If you have spent any time at all on the internet in the last few weeks, it would have been impossible to avoid being inundated with people partaking in, or discussing the Ice Bucket Challenge. While the movement has not been without its fair share of criticism, the positive results of this trend are beginning to show.

“This is an enormous boost for Australia’s MND community. We are astounded and heartened by the 10,000 new supporters who have donated a total of $500,000 in the last fortnight,” National Executive Directer of MND Australia, Caroline Birks, has stated.

“If MND touches your life, it will leave a mark. More than half of the donations made in the last two weeks have come from people who have been personally impacted by MND,” says Birks.

While these results are very positive and awareness is rising, there are still issues of confusion in the general public regarding terminology surrounding the disorder. As the movement began in America, where MND is referred to as ALS, many are ignorant to the fact that they are the same thing.

Regardless of these problems, Ms Birks sees this movement as a turning point for MND, stating: “The Ice Bucket Challenge goes to show that when we work collectively to heighten awareness of MND we can stir hearts, challenge minds and inspire action of a global scale.”
