How-to: Seasonal Switchout

As the temperature starts to drop, it’s the perfect time to start bringing some warmth back into your home with colour, texture, lighting and furnishings.

While it may not be the time to buy big ticket items, making a few changes can transform your home into a welcoming, cosy space.

How-to: Make your own art

When it comes to colour, you can either look at painting a room or feature wall, or if you are looking for something a bit more low-key Resene recommends creating artwork with a warming palette. Art makes a huge impact on the look and feel of your space, and it usually doesn’t take much space to store, so you can switch your pieces with the season. All you need is a large canvas (either a new or an existing canvas you can paint over) and some Resene testpots, then try your hand at making a cool weather artwork to coordinate with your seasonal schemes. This DIY artwork was created with Resene Quarter Tea, Resene Double Ash and Resene Half Truffle. Colours to warm up a room include neutral earthy tones as well as colours that remind us of warmth of the sun and fire like red, yellow and orange.

How-to: Add warmth to a space

When it comes to furnishings, a rug adds warmth underfoot and it can easily be switched to match the season. Sheepskin on the floor or over a chair can also provide a toasty nook.

Snuggling up on the sofa is made a lot more comfortable with extra cushions and a throw rug for comfort and style. As well as more cushion and throws for the bed, flannelette sheets are also a delight on cold nights. If cold drafts make you uncomfortable, look at adding curtains and door-stoppers to reduce the chill.

As the days become shorter, it’s also time to think about the changing light and how you can make the most of the limited sunshine.  Rearranging the furniture to catch the morning sunshine may be a good idea. You can also add a new lamp or some fragrant candles with delicious warming scents like vanilla and sandalwood to create a cosy vibe.
