How to deep clean your kitchen

If you’re a bit of a home chef, you probably find yourself doing a basic kitchen clean fairly often – wiping down benches, scrubbing out the sink and so on. But be honest: when was the last time you tackled the oven, or the fridge?

If your kitchen white-ware is looking a bit worse for wear, here’s our handy guide to deep cleaning all those forgotten spots, leaving you with a sparkling kitchen you’ll be proud to cook in.

Oven

When it comes to cleaning, your oven is probably one of the most neglected spots in the house. But there is a way to get rid of all those baked-in food spills and grease stains.

Simply place a large, oven-proof container full of water into your oven on the lowest rack. Turn the oven to its highest temperature leave the water to steam for 20-30 minutes.

Then turn off the oven and allow it to cool down without opening the door. Once it’s cool, use a damp cloth to scrub down the oven’s interior. The steam will have loosened the grime and it should wipe away with just a little elbow grease.

Fridge

The first step in cleaning the fridge is cleaning OUT the fridge.

That means getting in and checking the use-by dates on all your sauces and condiments, and throwing away anything that’s expired.

Then pull out any removable shelves and drawers and give them a wash with hot, soapy water.

Finally, spray down the inside with a good all-purpose cleaner and wipe it down to get rid of any sticky food spills or stains. Vinegar will also work well for this, if you prefer a more natural option.

Gas stovetop

While electrical stovetops can usually be wiped down easily, a gas stove can be a trickier task.

First, remove the grates and the burner tops and wash with soapy water. If they’re coated in seriously baked-on grease, mix up a paste of 1 part vinegar, 2 parts baking soda, add a few drops of dish soap, then cake the mixture on.

Allow to sit for 10-15 minutes then wash off with soap and a little elbow grease. Once the grates and burner tops are clean, leave them to dry.

Meanwhile, wipe down the surface of your stove with a damp cloth to collect any bits of food. Then wash with a non-abrasive soapy sponge to get rid of any grease.

Replace the grates and burner tops, and you’re done!

Sponge holder/drying rack

You might not think to wash these down regularly, but they’re actually a prime place for bacteria to multiply.

Use an antibacterial solution and a small brush to scrub away any mould, mildew and bacteria that has built up on your sponge holder or drying rack, then wash them down with hot, soapy water.
