Here's how to care for your tresses without heading to the salon.

While there’s nothing like a hair trim and a basin treatment to get restore your locks to their former glory there are some simple steps you can take to care for your home without going to the salon. We’ve rounded up our favourite tips for caring for our tresses without professional help below.

Tempted to trim

While it can be tempting to reach for the scissors to remedy split ends, this is one job that is best left for the professionals. Instead of taking a pair of scissors that probably aren’t made for cutting hair to your tresses, up your at-home haircare routine.  Focusing on your hair health can help you to extend the time between hair appointments. Reach for products that keep hair well-hydrated right around the clock will help to combat split ends.

If you’re short on supplies, try a nourishing pre-shampoo coconut oil mask that can help remedy split ends. Prior to washing your hair, apply coconut oil to the ends and mid-lengths of your hair. Leave for 20 minutes before shampooing and conditioning

Put down the styling tools

Even if you don’t colour your hair, repeated daily styling with heated tools can damage even the healthiest of hair. Taking a break from your usual blow-drying, straightening and curling routines is a great way to improve your hair health over the next few weeks.

Rather than taming your hair with heated tools on a daily basis, try using a leave-in conditioning product after washing to help tame tresses. Now is the perfect time to experiment with easy up-dos that don’t require any styling tools.  If it’s wavy, tousled tresses you’re after try braiding your hair before bed, so you can rise and shine with wavy locks.

To colour or not to colour?

If your hair colour is courtesy of a bottle, the best option when you can’t make it to the salon is to forgo colouring over the next few weeks. While in-salon hair colouring formulations and methods have improved dramatically recently and most now nurture hair while colouring, lightening hair, in particular, is still very damaging for hair. If you’ve been thinking about giving up the hair-colouring bottle, now could be the perfect time to do so.

It can be tempting to reach for at-home colouring supplies in the beauty aisle at the supermarket but if you usually head to the salon to get your colour done, now might not be the time to take up DIY colouring. Boxed hair dye and in-salon colouring formulations are not created equally. While most contemporary in-salon colour treatments are now formulated with nourishing ingredients that help to maintain hair health during the colouring process, inexpensive supermarket solutions are designed to just get the hair done quickly.

Wash less & nourish more

Now could be the perfect time to break the habit of washing your hair every day. While how often you really need to wash your hair depends on individual hair type and texture, there are very few people who actually need to wash their hair every day. Overwashing hair can strip hair and the scalp of nurturing natural hair oils which can lead to various problems. Rather than washing your hair each time you hop in the shower, take your cue from your tresses. If they’re feeling dry and dehydrated don’t reach for the shampoo bottle. Feeling oily and greasy? Then it’s probably time to wash.

If you’re trying to extend the life of your last in-salon colouring appointment, cutting back on how often you wash your hair can help too.
