German police have discovered a cellar during a search of an allotment that was reportedly rented by the suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Police have completed a two-day search of the plot on the outskirts of the north German city of Hanover in relation to an investigation into suspect Christian B.

According to British and German media, a cellar believed to have been part of a since-demolished garden house was found at the site.

The suspect reportedly lived there during 2007, the year Madeleine went missing. He is currently in prison in Germany for sex crimes unrelated to the disappearance.

The owner of a plot neighbouring the allotment that was searched told the BBC that Christian B arrived at the property in the spring or summer of 2007 and rented it for a few months.

Christian B reportedly told the neighbour he wanted to insulate the small shack that was on a concrete base in the garden with the small cellar underneath.

The neighbour said he went on holiday in July 2007 and when he returned in August, the structure had been removed and he never saw Christian B again.

German and UK police announced in June that Christian B was the prime suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance.

German police have said they have evidence that leads them to believe Madeleine is dead, however it is not yet strong enough to take the suspect to court.

Madeleine was three years old when she went missing in 2007 from a hotel room during a family holiday in Portugal.

Her parents were dining with friends nearby and had left her unattended in the room.
