Healthy tips for flying over the holiday season

Healthy tips for flying over the holiday season
Heading off on holiday? Bypass common flying ailments with these simple tips and you’ll arrive at your destination feeling fabulous.

Treating Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

DVT can be deadly and long-haul flights increase the risk. Immobility can lead to the formation of blood clots that can travel to your lungs. If you’re pregnant, recently had a baby or are older, be sure to wear compression socks.
And, above all else, move around the cabin. Airlines provide calf-exercise guides – use them to do regular stretches to make sure your blood keeps circulating.

Treating Cold & flu symptoms

The enclosed, shared space of a plane creates the perfect conditions to catch the sniffles, either by touching contaminated surfaces or person-to-person contact. Start taking vitamin C the week prior to your flight, make sure you have a great sleep the night before you go, and once on board keep hydrated and regularly wash your hands. If your seat neighbour is unwell, ask airline staff if you can move.

Treating Sore Ears

To tackle congestion and ear pain caused by cabin pressure when flying, Qantas advises “using nasal sprays, decongestants and antihistamines 30 minutes prior to descent.” You could also try swallowing, yawning or chewing gum.
