Giving a Helping Hand

Giving a Helping Hand
Moving your family can be a very daunting task at the best of times – any offer of help will make it a little easier.

Host a dinner

Join the Dots connects newly arrived people with established Australians over dinner. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable way to make a difference. How you can help: Help host a dinner or or make a donation by “shouting” someone a seat at a dinner table; joiningthedots.org

Take action

Amnesty International works to protect the rights of refugees and is campaigning for a regional approach to refugees in the Asia Pacific. How you can help: Donate or join your local Amnesty branch to take action on refugee issues; amnesty.org.au

Make a donation

The Red Cross provides emergency financial relief to refugees and asylum seekers and provides supports on arrival in Australia. How you can help: Make a donation or hold a fundraiser such as holding a Big Cake Bake throughout August; redcross.org.au

Volunteer

Settlement Services International in Sydney provides practical support to newly arrived refugees. How you can help: Show a new arrival how to shop, catch public transport and get to know how things work in Australia; ssi.org.au

Hold a fundraiser

The UN Refugee Agency, the UNHCR, provides assistance to refugees and other displaced people. How you can help: Create a team fundraising event and invite friends to either participate or donate; teamunhcr.org.au

Speak up

The worst thing we can do as a society is stay silent. You may think that these people and their suffering is far too removed from your daily life, but there are ways we can all make a difference.

Remaining vocal and speaking up about these issues, as well as lobbying your local politicians to take a stand, will keep the conversation alive – bringing us all one step closer to raising awareness and helping these people secure a brighter future.

Whether you attend council meetings, write to your local representative, spread awareness among your friends and family or simply post about these issues on Facebook. The more people who are fighting to help people less fortunate than themselves, the better.
