Violent storms and flash flooding have killed at least 16 people in south-eastern France with three more missing, officials say.
According to the BBC three elderly people in a retirement home near Antibes died when the property was inundated with floodwater. Others died trapped in their cars and in underground car parks as the waters rose.
French President Francois Hollande has announced a state of “natural disaster” in the affected region.
Heavy rain first hit the French Riveira, which borders the Mediterranean and northern Italy, on Saturday evening.
Nice, alone, is estimated to have more than 10 per cent of it’s annual rain fall in one day.
Cannes, too, was affected.
Cannes mayor Davis Lisnard told the BBC: “Some cars were carried off into the sea. We have rescued a lot of people, and we must now be vigilant against looting.”
