Australian and New Zealand flags projected onto the Matterhorn, Switzerland
Amid the outbreak of coronavirus in Switzerland, the town of Zermatt has been projecting a different image each night onto its iconic mountain, the Matterhorn, to symbolise hope.

The projections have allowed Zermatt to express solidarity with those suffering, and gratitude towards everyone helping to overcome the crisis.

With the Matterhorn itself being a symbol of strength and stability, the images on the mountain are meant to encourage people to stay strong, stand together and let the storm pass.

Zermatt has even dedicated a projection to the people of Australia and New Zealand, lighting up the mountain with the flags from the two nations.

The projections were accompanied by the following messages:

  • Australia: The country is having a hard time with the bushfires and now the coronavirus. Today we think of the Australian people and send hope and courage to get through the crisis well.
  • New Zealand: The country has mountains and beautiful landscapes, like Switzerland. We send our best regards and hope that the coronavirus will not spread further among the population.

By displaying the flags of the two nations, the people of Zermatt expressed their solidarity with the people of Australia and New Zealand and hope that this sign will give all people hope and courage to overcome the crisis.
