Top UK fashion designers have signed a letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson calling for the sale of real fur to be banned.

Signatories including Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood explained in the letter that they were able to make clothes “without being complicit in the suffering caused by the fur trade”.

“[We have a] shared belief that fashion, driven by consumers and enabled by innovation, is evolving to make animal fur obsolete, as more and more luxury fashion designers and high street retailers eliminate it from their collections,” the letter said.

“The majority of UK consumers reject animal fur on ethical grounds.”

If the letter proves successful, Britain would be the first country in the world to ban the sale of fur.

The letter was sent to Johnson’s office on Thursday evening local time, but the prime minister is yet to respond.

It comes after 50 of the UK’s biggest stars also wrote a letter to Johnson in February urging a ban on fur sales.

Some of the stars that signed included Dame Judi Dench, Thandie Newton, Ricky Gervais, Joanna Lumley and Imelda Staunton.

The letter read: “As long as Britain allows the sale of cruel fur from overseas, we remain complicit in an industry that causes immense animal suffering, environmental harm, and also presents risks to human health through the spread of deadly viruses.

“It is not enough to say that we have banned fur cruelty from our own backyard, we must stop outsourcing that same cruelty from overseas.

“Britain prides itself on being a nation of animal lovers, and that’s why we banned fur farming two decades ago – because it is unspeakably cruel and utterly devoid of respect for animals.”
