These must-know eyeshadow tips that are guaranteed to keep your eyes looking youthful for longer.

The delicate skin surrounding your eyes can be one of the first areas to reveal the signs of ageing. Because the skin is that much thinner fine lines and wrinkles often appear here first which can make applying make-up more challenging. But that doesn’t mean you have to ditch your favourite eyeshadows any time soon. Here are our favourite must-know eyeshadow tips that are guaranteed to keep your eyes looking youthful for longer.

Eyeshadow Tips to Keep Your Eyes Younger For Longer

1. Start with a Great Base

When it comes to creating a flawless complexion, you can forget about simply reaching for a foundation in the hope of covering imperfections up: great skin starts with a great skincare routine. And surprise, surprise: the delicate eye area is no exception to the rule.

Before you even reach for your favourite eyeshadow, it pays to invest in a seriously hydrating eye cream. If you’re going to be applying it before make-up, look for a formulation that suits your skin type and absorbs into your skin quickly.

Try: Estée Lauder Daywear Eye Cooling Anti-Oxidant Moisture GelCreme, $82; Clinique Eye 96-Hour Hydro-Filler Concentrate, $79; Chantecaille Nano Gold Energising Eye Serum, $360.

2. Prime Time

No matter what age you are, a little bit of primer will help eyeshadow stay put right around the clock. But because ageing eyelids tend to be a little more hooded, eyeshadow is more prone to creasing throughout the day. Rather than opt for your usual face primer, invest in a primer that has been formulated for the eye area.

Try: MECCA MAX The Transformer Eye Primer $20; Clinique All About Shadow Primer for Eyes, $44; Too Faced Shadow Insurance, $34

3. Pick your Eyeshadow Wisely

If you’ve ever applied your favourite eyeshadow immaculately before leaving the house, only to look in the mirror a few hours later to find it sitting in the fine lines surrounding your areas, you’re definitely not alone. Unfortunately, certain formulation types have a tendency of working their way off of the eyelids and into fine lines which can draw more attention to the signs of ageing.

Avoiding overly shimmery or glitter-based formulations is a good place to start as they tend to lack the staying power of matte formulations. Traditional powder eyeshadows can have a habit of enhancing fine lines and wrinkles too. Fortunately there are a plethora of next-generation creamy eyeshadow formulations that have been created that are easy to apply and stay put all-day long.

Try: Nars Velvet Shadow Stick, $50; M.A.C Pro Longwear Paint Pot, $48; Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow Stick, $63.

4. Make Mascara Your Best Friend

It might not strictly be an eyeshadow tip, but a fabulous mascara that lengthens lashes and enhances their volume should always be the finishing touch once you’ve applied your favourite eyeshadow. While it can be tempting to layer on layer after layer of mascara to get a voluminous lash look, international make-up artist for Dr. Hauschka, Karim Sattar, says to make the eyes younger and really make them pop it’s actually better to go easier on the mascara. He suggests keeping mascara to your top lashes only and switching out your usual black formulation for dark brown.  “Putting black mascara on the lower lashes can draw attention to dark circles and under-eye imperfections,” he says.
