Explore The Australian Outback By Rail

Explore The Australian Outback By Rail
Travel across the Nullarbor outback onboard the mighty Indian Pacific for a trip that's as much about the journey as the destination.

transcontinental train journey, luxurious cabins, well-appointed dining cars and stunning views – with a little imagination you could be on the set of the next Agatha Christie movie. The four-day, three-night journey on the Indian Pacific from Perth in Western Australia to Sydney is indeed a classic.

It’s 4352 kilometres long and starts by crossing one of the country’s most famous deserts on the longest stretch of straight rail in the world – the Nullarbor – to Adelaide in South Australia. From there, it’s on to the outback town of Broken Hill before eventually traversing the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains to arrive in Sydney.

The longest straight road in Australia.

The Indian Pacific, run by Great Southern Rail, has Platinum and Gold service levels, all with ample space. The food onboard the train is tailored to the region: including barramundi, locally produced beef and lamb, Margaret River cheeses, Barossa Valley smallgoods and native Australian fare, such as kangaroo, saltbush and wild rosella flower. All meals are accompanied by wines, beers and non-alcoholic drinks.

The train’s attentive and experienced staff will happily pass on their knowledge of the local areas and the train itself. As well as the stunning scenery, being onboard gives you the chance to meet people from around the world, catch up on a good book and maybe play a hand or two of cards.
