Everything you need to know about renewing your passport

Australians and Kiwis are both known for their love of travel, and with over 11.2 million overseas trips made by Aussies, and over 3 million holidays taken by Kiwis last year, staying on top of your passport renewal is a vital part of overseas adventures. And so, whether you’re a frequent flyer or a once-a-year traveller, consult our comprehensive guide on all things passport related to ensure you don’t miss out on the trip of a lifetime.

How often – and when – should you renew your passport?

A standard Australian passport is valid for ten years, and has 32 pages for those all-important overseas visas, so, as long as there’s still space in your passport, it should last you a decade; and the same goes fort a New Zealand passport. As some foreign governments require at least six months validity on your passport beyond your planned stay, it’s important to ensure you don’t travel overseas with anything less. We recommend renewing your passport at least 9 months before it’s due to expire, to avoid any issues with entering countries abroad.

How long does it take to renew your passport?

In Australia, it usually takes about 3 weeks to renew your passport, but for an additional fee of $215, your passport will be ready for mailing or collection in just two business days, once all your documents have been received. In New Zealand, you can expect to wait up to 10 working days for your passport to be renewed.

Can you renew your passport online?

While you’re able to renew your passport online, you will still need to send original supporting documentation, photos, and payment in the post to your nearest consular service in order for a valid passport application for Australians. For a step-by-step guide to renewing your passport, visit the Australian government’s website. If you’re based in New Zealand, you can find all the necessary information here, and the whole process can be done online. It is important to remember that only the official passport website endorsed by the Government is passports.govt.nz.  When renewing New Zealand passports, people should be diligent, and ensure they’re on the govt.nz website.

How much does it cost for a new passport?

A 10-year passport for anyone aged 16 and over is $293 in Australia; in New Zealand, they cost $191.

Where is my closest passport office?

In Australia, you’ll find passport offices in the following towns and cities: Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Thursday Island. In New Zealand, there are offices in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington.
