The gold medal winners of Air New Zealand’s 2017 Wine Awards have been announced.
More than 1300 wines were sampled over three days of judging, with an impressive 80 gold medals awarded overall.
A variety of wines from different regions were assessed, with Pinot Noir proving itself the ultimate champion. “Pinot Noir was once again the star performer with 20 golds,” Chair of Judges Warren Gibson said.
Gibson added that the gold medals were awarded across a range of regions. “Predominantly the wines came from Central Otago, but Marlborough and
Martinborough were also in the mix.” As the most recognized quality endorsement for wine in New Zealand, a gold medal from the Air New Zealand Wine Awards highlights the outstanding quality of the product.
“The top wines from other categories were exceptional, particularly from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Merlot, Cabernet Blends,” Gibson notes. “Marlborough has performed very strongly this year, with 41 golds, but it is good to see Central Otago and Hawke’s Bay bringing in plenty of gold medals too.”
221 silver medals and 493 bronze medals were also awarded, combining to make a total of 794 awarded medals across all 17 classes.
