The City’s quarterly e-waste drop offs are growing in popularity, with more residents choosing to dispose of their electronics sustainably.
“We diverted more than 90 tonnes of e-waste from landfill in 2017 and we hope to increase that figure this year,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.
“Although we encourage people to make sustainable choices when purchasing items, rapid changes in technology mean that electronics are becoming obsolete faster than ever before.
“Next year, we’ll be introducing free weekly e-waste collection services but until then our e-waste drop off days give residents the best opportunity to dispose of electrical items sustainably.”
Residents can bring televisions, computers and accessories, home office equipment, DVD and VHS players, electronic games, CDs, DVDs, tapes, camera, electronic components, phones, small kitchen appliances, power tools.
As much as 95 per cent of material collected is recycled. All electronic waste collected is separated locally by our contractor into various raw materials and on sold to processors. Steel is recovered and recycled locally as scrap metal, while plastics are shredded and sold for remanufacture into other plastic products. The circuits which contain precious metals are sent to South Korea for processing and recycling.
Items that aren’t accepted include white goods, hazardous waste, car batteries, smoke alarms and fire extinguishers.
