With New York, London and Milan Fashion weeks done and dusted for another year, Christian Dior’s show marks the beginning of Paris Fashion Week. For the Dior Spring/Summer 2020 runway show, creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri enlisted the assistance of Coloco, a Paris-based environmental design collective, which Chiuri has turned to for inspiration.
With the fashion world’s impact on the environment increasingly under scrutiny, with the help of Coloco, models were paraded through a grove of 164 trees. While Chiuri had initially planned to hold the show in one of Coloco’s urban gardens, it wasn’t meant to be and instead the trees that formed the backdrop of the show will be used in sustainability projects throughout Paris.
As for the clothes, it was Catherine Dior, Christian Dior’s sister, who became the muse for Chiuri’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection. Catherine was one of the first women in France to hold a professional licence for wholesale floristry.
Muse for the clothes on the catwalk was Catherine Dior, the designer’s sister, a member of the resistance and a devoted plantswoman who later became one of the first women in France to hold a professional licence for wholesale floristry. Within the collection, Dior’s passion for flora came to life with intricated floral detailing and the botanical prints of 17th-century botanist Maria Sybilla Merian.
