Dior heads to Marrakesh to Show Breathtaking Cruise 2020 Collection
Breathtaking Marrakesh formed the backdrop of the new Dior Cruise collection.

The show notes for Dior’s Cruise 2020 collection opened with a quote by Moroccan writer Tahar Ben Jelloun – “Culture teaches us to live together, teaches us that we’re not alone in the world, that other people have different traditions and ways of living that are just as valid as our own.”

Therefore it was fitting that creative Maria Grazia Chiuri chose Marrakesh as the breathtaking backdrop for her latest collection.

The breathtaking setting for Dior’s Cruise 2020 showing.

According to Dior Maria Grazia Chiuri has always had her heart set on establishing creative exchanges with African cultures and with her new Cruise collection the creative director she sought to create a dialogue with the real and imagined landscape of Morocco, at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, Europe and Africa, as a dream destination for artists, poets, writers and eternal adventurers.

To bring her dream to life Maria Grazia Chiuri turned to a number of collaborators to create the collection which she has described as “a world map.” Anthropologist Anne Grosfilley helped explore the remarkable origins and evolution of wax print fabric which is central to the collection.  In her book African Wax Print Textiles, she refutes simplistic interpretations. Her book presents fabrics like a family tree: her research reveals the multiple origins and constant evolution of Wax, the result of a long history between Europe, Asia and Africa. Maria Grazia Chiuri then collaborated with the Uniwax factory and studio (in Ivory Coast) to reinterpret Dior codes by integrating them into the weave of the fabric for a special edition.

Pathé Ouédraogo – aka Pathé’O, one of Africa’s leading designers – designed a special shirt for the collection which pays tribute to Nelson Mandela. Through his work, Ouédraogo supports fashion that is entirely Made in Africa. His emblematic shirts in bright colours and bold prints have become symbolic of the African continent and its cultural diversity.
