Dermalogica Pro Power Peel Review: The Treatment You Need for Glowing Skin

In the quest for radiant skin, MiNDFOOD STYLE editor, Nicole Saunders, puts the Dermalogica Pro Power Peel through its paces.

As we age, cell turnover slows down and our skin can begin to lose its luminosity and smoothness. A once-healthy and glowing complexion can begin to look dull, and fine lines start to appear. Fortunately, there are ways to speed up the cell renewal process and achieve the holy grail of skin goals: a flawless, even-toned, radiant complexion.

A chemical peel – which uses ingredients such as alpha-hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids to slough away skin cells – is one of the most effective ways to achieve visible results and enhance cell turnover. But not all peels are created equal – and nor should they be, as our individual skin types have unique needs and concerns. Which is why Dermalogica has formulated the Pro Power Peel collection – a customisable range of peel treatments that are powerful enough to get serious results without irritating or damaging skin.

The Pro Power Peel is available in three different offerings to cater to different skin concerns. UltraBright Peel: a brightening peel that targets the appearance of early signs of ageing and restores radiance; AdvancedRenewal Peel: a powerful 30 per cent Glycolic Acid peel that resurfaces skin to help minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; and PowerClear Peel: a multi-acid complex formulated for blemish-prone skin.

“Each of these has a different molecular size and penetrates the skin to different degrees, allowing skincare professionals to create tailored treatments that effectively address a vast range of skin concerns, from early signs of ageing to uneven skin tone and breakouts,” explains Caroline Parker, head of education for Dermalogica New Zealand. While each formulation can be used alone, they can also be used together to target more than one skin concern. “In short, the all-new Pro Power Peel redefines the peel experience – allowing skin therapists to provide every client with a full customised peel, which only takes 15-25 minutes, so can be incorporated into the Dermalogica ProSkin 60 treatment.”

Put to the Test: Dermalogica Pro Power Peel

Having fallen in love with Dermalogica’s at-home peel system, Rapid Reveal Peel, I didn’t need convincing to take things up a gear and experience the Dermalogica Pro Power Peel at Louise Gray Skin Care. “Peels designed to be used by a qualified professional tend to be more concentrated, at a very low pH, and their application is often personalised to the client’s skin,” explains Parker.

Founder Louise Gray thoroughly examines my skin and discusses my skin concerns with me before deciding on UltraBright Peel, which will enhance health and radiance. The real beauty of the Pro Power Peel, as Gray explains, is that not only can it be completely customised to suit your skin type and concerns, it can be coupled with existing Dermalogica ProSkin treatments and additional modalities.

Although the peel itself only takes around 15 minutes – I experience a little tingling as the peel works his magic, but Gray is on hand at all times to examine how my skin is reacting – the treatment at Louise Gray Skin Care takes 60 minutes and includes LED and BT Micro. Following the peel, I’m given an aftercare kit to use for the days following the treatment – which includes Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser, Calm Water Gel, Barrier Defense Booster and Super Sensitive Shield SPF30.

You might, like I did, experience some minor dryness or flaking, which Gray and Parker both explain is very normal. “The dryness and peeling is a normal skin response, as the peel has rapidly increased the movement of cells through your skin,” says Gray. “This has the action of pushing dull or dry skin cells off the surface and moving newer, fresher skin cells to the surface to replace them. Once the peeling has finished, your skin should be very smooth, soft and bright.”

The summer elements tend to leave the skin’s problem area, my forehead, rather parched, making fine lines more visible. In the days following the peel, not only is my skin more luminous, it’s plumper and my forehead lines are less noticeable. “After one Pro Power Peel, your skin will be dramatically smoother and brighter,” says Parker. Depending on your skincare concern, a series of treatments, says Parker, is recommended to get the best results.

“For example, if the focus is to treat ageing and pigmentation, the peels might be scheduled two weeks apart. This increases the cell renewal rate quickly rather than allowing the cells to build up again between treatments, and allows deeper areas of the skin to be treated,” explains Parker.

Even if you don’t opt for a series of Pro Power Peels, maintaining your skin’s newfound health is too easy with Dermalogica’s Rapid Reveal Peel. The at-home system, designed to combat dullness and fine lines that appear as skin starts to age, consists of 10 individually package peels that restore radiance and youthfulness to the skin. Phytoactive alpha-hydroxy acids slough away dead skin cells, fermented plant enzymes enhance skin tone and Australian caviar lime extract smoothes and brightens skin.

“For someone who already receives professional peels, they could use Rapid Reveal Peel between their courses of Pro Power Peel to help maintain the results,” explains Gray. Since I’m already familiar with the impressive results of the Rapid Reveal Peel, I’m keen to use it in conjunction with the Pro Power Peel. “The skin therapist performing the Dermalogica Pro Power Peel would advise on the best option and the wait time between using the Rapid Reveal Peel and receiving a Pro Power Peel.” Parker also adds that for someone who’s new to peels, the Rapid Reveal Peel is perfect to be used prior to a course of Pro Power Peels as it works as a gateway product, helping to increase your skin’s tolerance.
