Sydney Writers’ Festival: Have we got a story for you

By Mariam Digges

Molly Ringwald, Naomi Wolf and William Dalrymple are among the 500 guests descending on the 2013 Sydney Writers’ Festival this May.

Celebrating its 16th year, the independent festival in 2013 reflects on The Art of Storytelling, uniting storytellers from around the world from Monday 20 May to Friday 26 May.

Said the Artistic Director of the festival, Jemma Birrell of this year’s program:

“This year, Sydney Writers’ Festival celebrates the simple pleasure of being told a great tale. Stories lie at the heart of our lives. We need them to understand ourselves, to understand others, to make sense of the world around us. In 2013 we look at the depth and breadth of storytelling from Australia and around the world.”

Opening with one of Europe’s great oral storytellers on Tuesday May 21 at Sydney Theatre will be preacher and standup comedian Daniel Morden. Pier 2/3 Club Stage will host a public ticketed finale with film icon and novelist Molly Ringwald and her jazz band.

Other special guests include Robert Greene, Ruby Wax, Anita Desai, Archie Roach, Edward Rutherfurd, Hannah Kent, James Wood, Joe Rospars, Karl Ove Knausgaard, Kate Atkinson, Kate Mosse, Michael Sandel, and Gillian Meares.
