Cultural events to enjoy while social distancing
Many cultural institutions have had to close their doors and events have been cancelled as public gatherings are discouraged amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

But thankfully, you can still get your art fix, with a number of events available for virtual tours or live-streaming online.

Here are some of the best cultural offerings that you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home.

National Gallery of Victoria

The National Gallery of Victoria has opened its State collection and programming virtually during the temporary closure of the gallery.

The gallery is offering its exhibitions as guided virtual tours, with the Comme des Garçons exhibition Collecting Comme and NGV Indigenous Art collection exhibition Marking Time already available to experience by the NGV website.

KAWS: Companionship In The Age Of Loneliness will be available as a virtual tour on Saturday 21 March. Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines will be available as a virtual tour on Saturday 28 March.

These free curator-led tours will give audiences who had an upcoming visit planned a chance to see the exhibitions and fans the opportunity to revisit.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

The audience may not be able to attend in person, but the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is going ahead with its scheduled performances, live-streaming them for free on their YouTube channel.

Head On Photo Festival

This Sydney photography festival is moving online from 1-17 May and will be accompanied by an exciting program of web seminars and events throughout the Festival period.

Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra

Four Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra concerts celebrating 250 years of Beethoven will be live-streamed on their website and Facebook page.

The Social Distancing Festival

A theatre artist has created The Social Distancing Festival, an online community made to celebrate and showcase the work of the many artists around the world who have been affected by the need for social distancing.

It’s helping to get some of the projects that were cancelled due to the outbreak out into the world.

Metropolitan Opera: New York City

The Met is streaming opera performances every day for the duration of its closure due to coronavirus.

A different encore presentation from the company’s Live in HD series will be made available for free streaming on the Met website, with each performance available for a period of 20 hours, from 7:30 p.m. EDT – that’s 12:30pm for NZ watchers and 10:30am AEDT.

Google Arts and Culture

Long before the coronavirus pandemic, Google Arts and Culture had partnered with more than 2,500 of the world’s museums and galleries to offer virtual tours.

Discover collections at the most renowned galleries on the globe, including Paris’ Musée d’Orsay, Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum, or Florence’s Uffizi Gallery, to name a few!
