Recreate salon-worthy tresses at home with these top tips.

Stepping out of the salon with the tresses of your dreams is one thing, but we all know attempting to recreate said locks at home is another. Thankfully according to Kérastase National Education Manager, Gilda Wilson, creating a salon-worthy do doesn’t have to be a challenge. All it takes is some good advice courtesy of your stylist, a handful of tools and great products to keep your look in place around the clock. Mastering the art of the blow dry begins in the salon says Wilson. “It’s really important for a stylist to help coach their client on how to recreate a look at home,” she says. Before you even reach for the hair dryer, ask to add a ten-minute styling session to be added on to the end of your next salon appointment. As well as guiding you with the technique it’s important for your stylist to arm you with products suited to your hair type. “Incorrect prescription of products can result in the wrong texture,” Wilson explains. “Kérastase L’Incroyable Blowdry is a great introductory product as a base for lots of different styles. It can also be reheated with irons on day two if the look wants to be changed.”

 Tricks of the trade

Once you’re armed with the knowledge you need to create a salon-worthy blow dry at home you’ll need some tools. “A high-voltage hair dryer and a decent brush; large round or paddle are the easiest for beginners,” Wilson says. Using a brush in wet hair is one of the biggest mistakes most of us. “Wet hair is weaker than dry, so you don’t want to pull on the hair in a weak state; make sure hair has been dried off before using a brush.” Wilson says that best results come from applying a wet-hair product to hair before drying and then finishing it with a dry product. Whatever you do, Wilson explains that heat protection is a must.

 Taming Tresses

Thick, unruly hair is notoriously difficult to blow dry, but it’s by no means impossible. The key to taming rebellious tresses is a lot of patience and doing it in sections. “Drying time will be longer, so be patient as you work through each section,” she says. Thick hair often lacks moisture, so as well as using a heat protectant, apply a nourishing hair oil to keep locks hydrated around the clock.

Finer Things

A great blow wave is often the secret to adding oomph and volume to finer tresses. “Don’t be scared of product,” says Wilson. Kérastase Densifique Densimorphose Mousse is Wilson’s go-to for getting the job done. “Apply to wet hair then blow dry, then apply more to dry hair and dry off again. The layering technique will create fabulous volume. Finish with a strong hair spray.”
